In February 2024 I gathered dried stems of flora and plants while I listened to the tracks I was making for my EARTHLORE ep.

I pressed them into clay, they left behind their stories and patterns. Then I bisque fired them and covered the impressions in gold leaf. It was a slow and magical process. An antidote to everything, a balm.

These are my talisman, a little piece of the Norfolk/Suffolk borderlands embedded with thoughts and music. Hang one in your house, to remind you that we are all different but connected.

We all have something special to offer, like the plants.

EARTHLORE is the second in the new ‘Year of Lore’ series of 12 EPs by internationally acclaimed composer and performer Laura Cannell. Every month throughout 2024, Laura creates a new release of music to reflect real and imagined ‘Lores’. Earthlore follows January’s release Sealore.

Composed, performed and produced by Cannell, EARTHLORE steps up out of the water onto the grassy dunes and bracken clad cliffs that overlook the sea. Looking out over the prehistoric space where Doggerland was, it’s a chance to survey the land, the earth and think about the sphere that we are spinning on.

1. When I Returned You Were Gone
Overbow Violin
I read an article about a harpoon that was carved from a red deer antler, it was found by Norfolk fishermen in the depths of the sand and silt off the coast of Cromer, and while I was writing this track, I had a vision of the girl (who appears throughout this series of releases) returning centuries later to look for the harpoon that she had left there. The land had gone and the harpoon she had hidden had gone, but she was still here.

2. Lyke Wake Dirge
Symphony (Renaissance Style 4 string Hurdy Gurdy) and Voice
This 14th century English song has been in my head since I was a child, a strange soundtrack to a rural childhood, but it felt epic and Earthlore-esque. In my version I've taken the refrain, and played it with hurdy gurdy and voice. It's an arrangement/recomposition of a song to be sung at the wake of someone who has left this life. It's about the soul's travel, and the hazards it faces, on its way from earth to purgatory, it references Christianity, but much of the symbolism in the original full song is thought to be of pre-Christian origin.

3. Paradise Marshes
Octave Violin
The air on the marshes is cold as I walk under grey February skies. The bullrushes and reeds are steadfast, the paths are coated in flints after the flooding has washed away the soft sandy mud. The stillness has a colour, a dark grey of being at once detached from the news cycle of early 2024 and able to breath. A simple paradise in a messed up world.
