UNLOCKING RITUALS is the new solo EP from UK based Composer/Performer Laura Cannell. Stepping away from her signature overbow violin and recorders, the 4 track EP features a full church pipe organ that was built in 1899, and was recorded live in single takes inside a large rural East Anglian village church. Improvisation and fragmented ancient musical relics are at the heart of Cannell’s music, and here the slow moving air inside instrument becomes slow moving music in the building.

Drawing on centuries of memories that are embedded in the walls, Unlocking Rituals follows Cannell’s recent solo album ‘Antiphony of the Trees’, which is focussed solely on recorders. The organ pipes are the recorder at their most minimal, each pipe splits the air in two to make one tone, and played together it feels as close to being inside the instrument as is possible, the building acting as the resonant body.

The four tracks are from a collection of improvisations made on chilly Monday mornings towards the end of 2021. In an arrangement with the church warden, Laura would unlock the church for the public to visit and was given access to the play the pipe organ, in part, “to keep the organ in good health and stop the bellows from drying out”, this was during a fallow year of church usage and became her Monday morning ritual. 
Joy and sorrow are in the walls of the 14th century building, their shadows flicker and fall through clear diamond glass onto carved oak pews. The memories of family, love and loss lay dormant within in the bones of the building until the great slumbering animal is woken, the sound of the pipes acting as an early morning alarm call to the deep dreams of the past.

Foot pedalled bass notes slowly fill the space with warm breathy tones, billowing like a rolling sea mist into all of its corners; over the medieval painted walls and carved hammer-beamed roof, the dissonances fill the air in a smoky slow motion. Secular sounds rising out of the silence.

“I am fascinated with the rituals we build for ourselves, I only noticed that I had created this one in retrospect, realising that it had become an integral sonic part of my week. I spent solitary moments inside the building, exploring the dissonances and oscillations of the pipes, sometimes the split air that spilled out was louder than the note itself. I wanted to feel like I was inside the lungs of this instrument as it came to life and sang my secular harmonies before a congregation returned to play it for their sacred ones”. (L.Cannell 2022)
