Laura Cannell and Kate Ellis present their 9th EP of the year. The idea of an EP a month was innocent enough, it was conceived in October 2020 while looking forward at a performance free calendar.
“Producing this amount of music together has been enlightening, we could not know how our collaborative language would develop, and we are still learning. This month features highly charged and transitional sounds as summer peaks and autumn appears on the horizon. We also debut one of the exploratory real-time compositions we made playing live for the first time together - On Sacred Roman Earth”.
Not only have our livelihoods changed, but our opportunities to connect with each other and with audiences have too. These EPs now act as a direct monthly performance
between us and our listeners. We create and present the music to each other, it is always surprising, we evolve it and shape it and enjoy the moments of making before letting it go.”
September Sounds was recorded live inside a rural 15th Century church in mid-Suffolk, and remotely between Suffolk & Essex and in September 2021. It is part 9 of a series of EP releases which are written, recorded and released every month throughout 2021. This month features Cannell’s signature evocative violin, voice & alongside Ellis’s deeply expressive cello, bass and octave violin playing.
Track List:
1. Another World
Although the world may look the same, we know it has shifted. We have shifted, people are
displaced, but we make these sounds indicate hope and strength. The violin and voice thread through the optimistic storms and sun strobes of cello and double bass. The components are the same but our actions and thoughts are different now.
2. On Sacred Roman Earth
We played together for the first time in the 15th century village church, on the grounds of an ancient Roman sacred site. Finding our feet and exploring the space. If you listen closely you can hear our footsteps and walk with us as we gaze through clear leaded window panes among the oak pews and stone tiled floor. The air captured inside fluttering like birds in a vast wooden apexed sky.
3. Ancient Moons
Re-living past conversations, whirring engines and flashing images. Ancient moons entwine with vivid conversations and thoughts, falling in and out of step. Waxing and waning.
About The Project:
This release is the eighth in a series of twelve as part of a major new project: THESE FERAL LANDS – A Year Documented in Sound and Art. An ambitious and exciting creative documentation of 2021 resulting in new music and films created and released monthly, along with a column published at Caught by the River. September’s film is by the visual artist Laura Sheeran. The project is supported by Arts Council England's National Lottery Funding.
About Laura & Kate:
Since meeting in early 2020 when Laura was commissioned by Alex Groves of SOLO to write a solo cello piece for Kate, the duo have since developed a strong writing partnership and produced 9 releases; an album ‘These Feral Lands: Volume 1’ in collaboration with Writer & Comedian Stewart Lee, Winter Rituals EP (broadcast widely on BBC Radio 3 inc. Christmas Day and New Years Eve), and now 9 monthly EPs January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August and September Sounds. In April 2021 they were selected as Spotlight Artists on BBC 6Music Recommends with Tom Ravenscroft, and appear on SOHO Radio & NYC + Culture each month as guests of Max Reinhardt to play and discuss their new EPs.
